“Once you start approaching your body with curiosity rather than with fear, everything shifts.”

- Bessel Van der Kolk

Hi, I’m Bronwyn. I arrived into the world of psychotherapy and counselling through a long history as an artist in social work, youth work, community engagement and arts education. For over ten years I used the mediums of art, movement and drama to develop workshops, performances, trainings, counselling programs, festivals, and conferences innovating new approaches toward healing and growth. I worked with diverse communities, schools, community centres, theatres, families, youth, women, young men, lgbttiqq2s, refugees, artists, health practitioners and survivors. As this work became increasingly more meaningful, I desired to move beyond my capacities and delve into the psychobiology of mind-body healing, human development, and the neurobiology of trauma through therapy work. I have since had the privilege of working with clients from all different walks of life and am deeply committed to the creation of safe, inclusive, compassionate therapy.

I have a Master of Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy, a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Diploma in Early Childhood Education. I am currently completing my training in EMDR to become a certified EMDR Therapist and will continue to pursue education in the areas of consultancy and training. I have undergone additional training in Embodied Healing, Dissociation, Focusing Oriented Therapy, Foundations of Existential Practice, Narrative Therapy, Art Therapy, Theatrical Clowning, Transpersonal Therapy, Trauma Informed Healing, Complex Trauma and Youth Discourse. I have worked with The Indigo Project, Pure Insights, Wesley Hospital Ashfield, Twenty10, Cumberland Women’s Health Centre, Auburn Youth Centre, and WISE Disability Employment Services. I am currently exclusively as a private practice psychotherapist with As You Are Psychotherapy & Counselling. I am a member of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and registered on the Australian Register for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP). I am a member of the College of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Practices (CATSIHP). I practice with a clear adherence to the ethical guidelines of PACFA.

As a therapist and counsellor, I work comfortably with clients who bring an array of life experiences, concerns and needs. These clients are adolescents, adults, trans people, non binary/gender diverse individuals, couples, people with disabilities, sex workers, parents, partners and BIPOC individuals. Some of the concerns I have engaged with include anxiety, PTSD, complex diagnoses, complex trauma, disordered eating, chronic pain, suicide ideation, depression, co-morbidity, childhood trauma, family of origin issues, dissociation, addictions and substance use, forced adoption, loss of a parent, grief, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse, life transitions, relationships, work stress, self esteem, coping, illness, identity and belonging. As a practitioner, I feel that my own experiences of trauma, survival, healing, individual and group therapy, have given me deep empathy and respect for the healing process. It has also allowed me to understand how important the role of the therapist is as a result of sitting in the position of the client. I hold great respect and compassion for each of my clients and endeavour to establish a relationship wherein they are able to experience, express, embody, and empower the many stories their bodies hold.

In my therapy I use EMDR (eye movement desensitisation re-processing), Gestalt, Resource, Attachment Informed, Person-Centred, Narrative, Somatic, Psychodynamic, Existential, Creative, Strengths-Based, Integrative and Holistic modalities with my clients. Integrative therapy is a progressive model that allows for me to combine approaches to meet the specific needs of the client. These might also include Imagery Re-scripting and Visualisation, Resource Therapy, IFS (internal family systems), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Focusing-Oriented Therapy, and Solutions Focused Therapy. Central to the style in which we work is client choice. Throughout the course of therapy as needs shift and concerns change for the client so does the framework.
